Black bear population rebounds across the American South after near collapse

Black bears are quietly reclaiming their historical range across the American South β€” a recovery built not on dramatic intervention, but on decades of hunting protections and slow habitat healing.

Arkansas fell to an estimated 40 or 50 bears in the 1950s, restocked with more than 250 animals trucked in from Minnesota and Manitoba, and now holds roughly 5,000. Louisiana, whose bears came off the federal threatened list in 2016, is home to about 1,500; Missouri has around 1,000 and Tennessee some 6,000.

Wildlife managers caution that human-bear conflict will grow as animals move into farms and suburban edges, and critical habitats remain under pressure. Still, the trajectory shows what patient, sustained conservation can accomplish.

Chapter 4: Power | 4-1 Supernatural aid / Natural nourishment

The hero refuses the call to adventure. They are unwilling or unable to move forward to the quest that beckons them out into the world.

At this moment of despair, a magical or transcendent mentor appears to offer "supernatural aid" β€” special abilities, even "superpowers," that prove invaluable on the hero's quest. With this supernatural aid, the hero has everything they will ever need to save the day.

The antihero refuses the call to peace. They are unwilling or unable to stop their toxic patterns of striving and burnout.

They wait for some extraordinary power to arrive β€” something that will finally make them equal to the task. But it never comes. And they slowly realize it never will. They are, always have been, and always will be an ordinary human. And in that, they have all the power they need. The aid they sought was always within them, and it is perfectly natural, extremely powerful, and yet wholly unremarkable.
