Renewables account for 92% of new power capacity worldwide in 2024

Countries added a record amount of renewable power in 2024, according to an analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency. The analysis found that solar is by far the fastest-growing form of renewable power, amounting to 77% of new capacity, with wind in a distant second at 19%. Continuing its clean-energy dominance, China installed more renewable power than all other countries combined last year. Still, growth is not on pace to meet a global goal to triple renewable capacity by the end of this decade.

Colombia creates landmark territory to protect uncontacted Indigenous groups

Colombia has created a first-of-its-kind territory meant to protect a group of Indigenous people living between the Caquetá and Putumayo Rivers in the Amazon Rainforest. The 2.7-million-acre territory is the first in the country specifically designed for people living in isolation. The Yuri-Passé people have faced increasing pressure from illegal mining and organized crime groups, forcing neighboring Indigenous communities to reach out to the government on their behalf. The creation of the territory follows years of advocacy by human rights and conservation groups.

Prostate cancer surgery breakthrough offers hope for erectile function

A new form of prostate cancer surgery nearly doubles the chances of men retaining erectile function, according to a new trial conducted by University College London. Known as NeuroSafe, the procedure checks tissue removed during the operation. If the tumor appears to have been removed, the nerve-containing outer layer of the prostate is left intact. The trial assessed 344 men with prostate cancer and no history of erectile dysfunction. 56% of men who had standard surgery reported severe erectile dysfunction, compared with 38% who had NeuroSafe surgery.

New Delhi transforms degraded lands into biodiversity parks

New Delhi, India’s capital, struggles with extremely poor air quality and heat waves. In response, since 2004, the city has created seven large “biodiversity parks” on previously degraded land. The Aravalli Biodiversity Park is now a thriving forest of native plants. The Neela Hauz Biodiversity Park is home to a lake that was once a dumping ground for untreated sewage. All seven parks were restored by the Delhi Development Authority and the University of Delhi and together span 2,026 acres.

First Earth Fire Alliance satellite for detecting wildfires is now in orbit

The FireSat constellation, which will consist of more than 50 satellites when it goes live, is the first of its kind that's built to detect and track fires. It's an initiative launched by nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance, which includes Google and Muon Space as partners, among others. According to Google, current satellite systems rely on low-resolution imagery and cover a particular area only once every 12 hours to spot large wildfires spanning a couple of acres. FireSat will be able to detect wildfires as small as the size of a classroom and deliver high-resolution visual updates every 20 minutes.

James Blyth of Scotland builds world’s first ever wind turbine used for electricity generation (1887 C.E.)

Blyth's 10-meter high, cloth-sailed wind turbine was installed in the garden of his holiday cottage at Marykirk in Kincardineshire and was used to charge accumulators developed by the Frenchman Camille Alphonse Faure, to power the lighting in the cottage, thus making it the first house in the world to have its electricity supplied by wind power. Blyth offered the surplus electricity to the people of Marykirk for lighting the main street, however, they turned down the offer as they thought electricity was "the work of the devil."

Humanity achieves 100% renewable energy (2050 C.E. ???)

In a historic milestone for climate action, the global community completes a stunning transformation in how we power our lives and economies, in just a matter of decades. By sourcing all the world's energy for heating, cooling, transport, and electricity from green sources, we save billions of human and non-human lives and help ensure a livable, sustainable planet for generations to come.

Weekly reflection

Hi beautiful people,

One of the things I love about coaching is how it can help us decenter the problems and emotional "issues" in our lives. While therapy is incredibly useful, it can perhaps sometimes encourage us to re-process difficult situations, relationships, etc., beyond the point of usefulness. We start breathing life into the dark, difficult, negative aspects of our lives. We get stuck on what we did wrong, what we didn't get, or who hurt us in the past.

Remember: Your "issues" are only ever just a tiny fraction of who you are. They are potholes in the road. They are a puff of cloud temporarily blocking out the vast Sun of your being.

Of course, be careful not to bypass difficult emotions or fail to take accountability for unhealthy behaviors. When we leave these issues unaddressed, they eventually come back to haunt us and those in our lives.

But you don't always need to go back into the pain and difficulty over and over. I think you'd be surprised how often it's OK to just focus on the truth of who you are and the positive vision you want to bring into the world.

Where in your life might you simply hang up the phone, let it go, and move forward?

Love,
Peter
