U.S. West Coast groundfish fishery completes historic comeback after 25 years

The West Coast groundfish industry has achieved a monumental recovery 25 years after being declared a federal disaster.

Originally reported by Mongabay, the fishery reached a historic milestone in late 2025 when the yelloweye rockfish was declared fully rebuilt, 60 years ahead of schedule. By utilizing catch shares and innovative "light-touch" gear, scientists and fishers successfully restored 10 overfished species to healthy levels.

While high monitoring costs remain a challenge, this measured victory serves as a global model for how science-based management can revive both marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.

The zone of genius

We all have passions. We all have talents. We all have values. And fortunately, quite often, they overlap. There are activities that inspire us, at which we naturally excel, and which align with what we believe is good and right.

This area of overlap is what we might call our zone of genius.

One of our key tasks is to seek out these areas of overlap. When acting from our zone of genius, we make an outsized, often seemingly effortless impact on something we care deeply about, while also refueling and enlivening ourselves in the process.

It’s a win-win.

Something almost like magic happens when we allow ourselves to focus here. Our lives gain a level of focus, clarity, and momentum that before might have seemed impossible. Rather than trudging through tasks that fail to bring us alive or at which we struggle to succeed, we allow ourselves to follow our own internal gravity, naturally propelling ourselves forward with ease.

But when we fail to integrate these essential ingredients, we fall into three common traps that weaken our efficacy and fulfillment:

  • If our talents are not engaged, we become hobbyists. We spend our life force on something where we struggle to contribute effectively. We often feel frustrated because we aren't able to deliver our gift with impact.
  • If our values are not engaged, we become mercenaries. We spend our life force on someone else's vision for the world. We feel like frauds, delivering our gifts to the wrong address.
  • If our passions are not engaged, we become martyrs. We are competent and righteous, but without ever tending to our own aliveness and well-being. We end up resentful and depleted.

The hero sets out into the world to slay the dragon.

The antihero returns home to themselves, to their zone of genius, where they can fully harness their power and offer their gifts to the world for the long haul.
