Good News for Humankind 🌏

Your daily spark of possibility β€” one real milestone for change from around the world.

Global suicide rate has fallen by 40% since 1995

A landmark study published in The Lancet Public Health by researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington found that the global age-standardized suicide mortality rate fell nearly 40% between 1990 and 2021 β€” from 15 deaths per 100,000 people to nine.

The decline was driven by measurable interventions including restrictions on toxic pesticides, expanded mental health services, and national prevention strategies. Female suicide rates fell more than 50% globally over the period.

Roughly 740,000 people still die by suicide each year, and rates have risen in parts of Latin America and North America, underscoring that progress is real but uneven β€” and that further investment in evidence-based prevention can save more lives.

Building capacity amidst the insanity

I generally do a good job of not getting consumed by all the tragedy and bad news streaming toward us in every moment from every corner of the world. I know it's not helpful, or even possible, to feel and absorb all the pain around the world today. It's too much for anyone.

But then, a few days ago, President Trump posted a social media message about the imminent destruction of an "entire civilization." From where I stand, its callousness was truly demented and insane. I found it quite distressing, not just that anyone with any degree of power could talk that way, but that so many others are unwilling to call it out for what it is.

I notice the part of me that so badly wants to shut this all out, that doesn't believe I can handle what's happening in the world today. But as I've sat with it, I've found a new level of resolve. No, I won't constantly go back to the well of suffering to the point of overwhelm. I will be responsible with what I let in. But at the same time, I sense that the world is asking me, and maybe all of us, to grow my capacity to digest this kind of callousness and all the suffering it causes, to be able to absorb it and reckon with it without losing myself.

And I can do that simply by breathing. I can do that by connecting with others. I can do that by recognizing all the beauty that persists even amid the suffering.

That's what this newsletter is for.

Love,
Peter
