Croatia declared free of landmines after 31 years

After more than three decades of meticulous and dangerous work, Croatia has officially been declared free of landmines.

Stemming from the 1990s Homeland War, the clearance operations resulted in the safe removal of nearly 107,000 landmines and over 407,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance. Supported heavily by European Union funding, the 1.2 billion euro effort successfully reclaimed vast areas of agricultural land, dense forests, and national parks.

This monumental achievement fulfills the country's obligations under the Ottawa Convention, ensuring a much safer future for its citizens and providing an inspiring blueprint for post-conflict recovery worldwide.

Antihero Project 🕊️

Hi beautiful people,

The more I sit with my entry here yesterday, the more it makes me uncomfortable. I think I missed the bigger picture.

I do think there is room for celebration and/or a sense of relief after Saturday's events in Iran. I do not blame many Iranians for dancing in the streets. I do not blame myself for feeling many different ways at once.

But it's also clear to me now that Saturday wasn't an isolated action against a brutal, murderous dictator. It was the start of another illegal war with no real plan or objective.

War must be the very last resort. Always.

There are many complex, ambiguous moral questions in this world. But that is not one of them.

Love,
Peter
