Millions of New York City workers gain additional time off through new law

Millions of workers in New York City are benefiting from a major expansion of the Protected Time Off Law, which officially took effect in late February 2026.

The progressive legislation grants employees an additional 32 hours of unpaid, protected leave that is available immediately upon hire or at the start of the calendar year. This ensures workers do not have to wait to accrue hours before addressing sudden medical emergencies or family crises.

The law also vastly expands permitted uses to include mental health care, public disaster recovery, and caring for disabled loved ones.

You should be bored more often

We live in a world where we are bombarded with near-infinite, impossibly alluring forms of pleasure and entertainment: screens, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, porn, and on and on.

We usually think of burnout simply as a matter of time management. But this constant overstimulation is another critical factor.

We don't need to label these forms of entertainment as "bad" or feel shame about them to see the reality: they reliably give us a momentary hit of dopamine, numbing, or escape at the cost of our long-term energy, peace, and well-being.

Combined with our impossibly busy calendars and the existential weight of the world today, this constant bombardment leaves so many of us completely burned out.

Through a daily mindfulness, contemplative, or spiritual practice, we learn to find pleasure and peace even in the absence of such input. We learn to find the goodness in simply being here in this moment.

And, honestly, sometimes it's pretty boring—especially for those of us (raising my hand here) who have become addicted to the dopamine drip.

Often, a daily practice is just sitting there, breathing, noticing, being. It's the complete antithesis of everything we've grown accustomed to.

But that boredom is a good thing.

  • Boredom is healthy.
  • Boredom is a gateway to a deeper peace.
  • Boredom is an act of resistance in a time when we are bombarded with supercharged stimuli and constantly pressured to do more, more, more.

If it isn't at least a little boring, it's not a daily practice.

Without befriending boredom, you cannot free yourself from the grips of burnout. You cannot deepen your capacity for true, resilient peace.

Love,
Peter
